ANTEPRIMA x CHAT Contemporary Textile Art Prize 2024.

All the winners of the first edition.

ANTEPRIMA is pleased to announce that Yee I-Lann, Roziah Binti Jalalid, and Julitah Kulinting are the winners of the inaugural ANTEPRIMA x CHAT Contemporary Textile Art Prize 2024.

This prize was established to foster the development of creative concepts and visionary ideas that respond to the dynamics of contemporary society. With a global perspective, the prize seeks to explore the boundless possibilities of textile art and stimulate new visions, focusing particularly on Asian viewpoints.

The initiative reflects the vision of Izumi Ogino, Creative Director of ANTEPRIMA, who sees art as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a powerful means to support creatives and visionaries.

A jury of renowned international curators, including Ann Coxon (former Curator of International Art at Tate Modern), Judith Greer (Sharjah Art Foundation), Lesley Ma (Metropolitan Museum of Art), Cuauhtémoc Medina (Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo), and Takahashi Mizuki (CHAT), carefully selected eight finalists from a total of 29 submissions.

These entries represented a wide range of experiences and cultural contexts, evaluated based on criteria such as artistic potential, originality, technical mastery, ideas, and methodology.

The Winners

The winners stood out for their innovative approach to textile art, deeply tied to local traditions and global challenges:

  • Yee I-Lann, a native of Sabah, employs the tikar—a woven mat traditional to Southeast Asia—as a medium to tell stories, explore cultural connections, and promote democratic spaces for sharing.

  • In collaboration with Roziah Binti Jalalid and Julitah Kulinting, weavers from the Dusun-Murut communities of Keningau and the Bajau populations of Semporna, Yee created works such as Jalan-Jalan Cari Jalan ("wandering in search of a path"), a labyrinthine mat crafted from plastic waste collected from the Sulu and Celebes seas.

This project poetically addresses marine pollution, highlighting the importance of sustainability and environmental regeneration.

"We admired the exceptional synergy between long-term social collaboration, extraordinary technical achievements, and the innovative weaving techniques of the mats, as well as the beautiful gallery installation that enhances the complexity of the project. Their work represents a deeply committed yet joyful community endeavor, capable of reimagining the past and successfully projecting it toward a different future, both socially, economically, and aesthetically," commented the international jury.

The jury recognized their outstanding social commitment, artistic depth, and textile innovation, awarding them a prize of HK$300,000 to celebrate their contribution to contemporary art.

An honorable mention was awarded to Shao Chun for their exceptional research on textile materials and their ability to inspire imagination and dialogue.

Audience Award

The Audience Award will be presented on March 3, 2025. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote, making this event a unique occasion to expand the dialogue between art and the public, and to strengthen the role of textiles as a tool for innovation and storytelling.

Through this new platform, ANTEPRIMA reaffirms its commitment to exploring the boundaries between fashion and art, celebrating the transformative power of creative expression.
